Neetu Kapoor, who recently admitted to never having used sunscreen, has also opened up about swearing by a unique recipe for probiotics, often referred to as “good” or “helpful” bacteria by health professionals.

In a chat with Mira Rajput Kapur, when asked about her approach to skincare, Neetu emphasised the importance of gut health along with skin care and the ‘inside out principle that involves taking care of her skin from the inside through diet and supplements’, stating, “gut is the main thing.”

She went on to share a traditional South Indian recipe for probiotics that involves fermenting cooked rice in an earthen pot: “I have a great recipe for probiotics. It really works really well. They do it in the south. So, you take a little bit, like a spoonful, of cooked rice and put it in an earthen pot with water. Let it ferment overnight. The next morning, take the rice and the kanji, put a little tadka (tempering technique used in Indian cooking), and have for breakfast. That is the best thing. Kanji, the water, is the best probiotic, better than having capsules.”

According to dietician Suhani Seth Agarwal, head of department, dietetics, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, the state of your gut can directly impact skin health, and one way to nurture both is by incorporating probiotics into your diet.

The gut and skin share a complex relationship. Gut imbalances can manifest in various skin issues, including acne, eczema, and rosacea. Agarwal explains that maintaining a balanced gut microbiome can promote clearer, healthier skin.

Probiotics, the beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods, help to restore this balance, reducing inflammation that contributes to these skin problems. As emerging studies suggest, probiotics can also enhance skin hydration and contribute to a glowing complexion.

As Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, explains, probiotics are live microorganisms often referred to as “good” or “friendly” bacteria. These microorganisms offer numerous health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. Probiotics are naturally found in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and certain supplements.

Probiotics provide a range of health advantages, from digestive health to mental well-being, Agarwal explained:

Digestive Health: Probiotics are best known for promoting gut health. They can alleviate issues such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and constipation. Regularly consuming probiotic-rich foods can help maintain a balanced digestive system.

Immune System Support: A healthy gut is the cornerstone of a strong immune system. Probiotics can boost immune responses and reduce the risk of infections.

Mental Health: Gut health is closely linked to mental well-being. Probiotics can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, as they influence the gut-brain axis and have anti-inflammatory effects.

Skin Health: Probiotics play a vital role in promoting healthier skin. They help alleviate inflammation and balance the skin’s microbiome, potentially reducing issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Neetu Kapoor’s inclusion of probiotics in her skincare routine not only benefits the skin but embodies a more holistic approach to wellness, both experts say. By using local and fermented ingredients, she emphasises the importance of nutrition in maintaining not just external beauty but also internal health.

While probiotics are generally safe for most individuals, there are potential side effects, including gas and bloating, especially when first introduced into the diet. Those with compromised immune systems or severe health conditions should consult a healthcare professional before starting probiotic supplements, as they may be at risk for infections.
